This month's film releases of "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Avatar" herald a new era in cinematic visual effects. Both movies create fantasy worlds using state-of-the-art graphics and cutting-edge 3D technology.

The much loved children's classic "Where the Wild Things Are" is now enchanting audiences in cinemas around the world.

Director Spike Jonze took up the challenge to adapt the children's book about the imaginary adventures of a young boy and his larger-than-life monster friends.

The adaptation would not have been possible without the help of numerous special effects.

But what does it take to bring these furry creatures to life?

Tim Webber is the visual supervisor at CFC Framestore in London, the company behind the film's special effects.

He says that director Spike Jonze wanted them to make the monsters as real as possible.

For this, Framestore used an innovative technique, which differs greatly from traditional animations.
